When most homeowners think of their roofs, they think of the metal sheeting of Colorbond.

There is an entire separate system to just the roofing material. The gutter system is one of the most important aspects of your roof as it collects rainwater and other material that accumulates on your roof and directs it into downspouts and drainage.

It’s important that your gutter system is properly constructed and maintained as it serves a variety of purposes in protecting your home. First and foremost, it prevents erosion and water damage on your home’s foundation. This can be weakened by continuous contact with running water. Your guttering also moves water toward safe areas for drainage, protecting your fuse-box, fixtures, windows, and doors from water damage.

To understand your guttering system, let’s examine each of the different components.

GUTTERS IN YOUR GUTTER SYSTEM

The most obvious part of the gutter system are the gutters themselves.

These are rainwater troughs that serve as channels at the eave of the roof. Gutters can suffer from rust from continued exposure from water, particularly standing water, as well as a build-up of debris.

Debris can take the form of wet leaves, sediment, branches, and more. Allowing debris to accumulate in your gutters is dangerous, because it places far more weight on the structures supporting the gutters than is intended. It can also contribute to combustion which has been known to cause disastrous house fires. Cleaning your gutters regularly is a great way to ensure that you will not need a gutter replacement.

END CAP OF YOUR GUTTER SYSTEM

The end cap of a gutter is the end piece of the gutter. It is fitted over the end of the gutter trough and secured in place by mounting bolts of screws. The end cap is fixed on the portion of your roofing where the guttering is either separated or nut used.

FASCIA BRACKET OF YOUR GUTTER SYSTEM

Putting holes in your gutter to mount it to your home’s eave defeats the purpose of collecting water and increases the chance of rust and erosion. Fascia brackets are used to mount the guttering to your home in a support carriage.

DOWNSPOUTS & BRACKETS OF YOUR GUTTER SYSTEM

The downspouts of the gutter system are the piping that channels the collected water from the gutters down and out of the guttering system. The rainwater is either put directly into a storm drain or emptied over rocks and sediment that will quickly drain it naturally.

Brackets are used to mount the downspout to the exterior of your home. Different types of mounting bolts or screws are required depending on the material of your home’s exterior, weatherboard, brick and stone.

ELBOW OF YOUR GUTTER SYSTEM

Elbows are components of the downspout. They are used when the exterior wall is not flat vertically and the downspout must conform to the changing shape of your home. This allows the downspout to hug your exterior wall tightly so that it does not distract from your home’s appearance while allowing the downspout to function properly.
